Aero, Flight, Tequila, Force 5
Owing to the sensible hull weight
restriction, hulls are strong, durable and well priced, generally of
fibreglass/carbon/foam sandwich construction, and remain competitive for many years.
(The writer finished 3rd in the National Championships with a 6 year
old boat, after finishing 2nd in the State Championships last season
when the boat was 5 years old). Most hulls are self-draining.
Ideally 120 - 150 kg combined, although many successful combinations
have been as low as 110 kg or as high as 160 kg.
No age limitations. Juniors generally begin
crewing (or skippering with a parent as crew) from around age 11,
while at the other end of the scale we have at least one active
sailor well into his 70's.

In addition to these fleets, there are
MG14's sailing in other Sydney clubs such as Balmain and
Northbridge, and in various country locations such as Wagga Wagga,
Canberra, St Georges
Basin, Nowra, Ballina,
Clarence River.
National Championships and State
Championships
At these events, a handicap series is held in conjunction with the
championship series, so all boats have a chance of winning or
finishing amongst the prize winners. Also awarded are prizes for
categories such as junior sailors, veteran crews, family groups,
veteran boats, plus encouragement awards and prizes for the last
boat that finished every heat, etc. Everything possible is done to
ensure these events are enjoyed by everyone and are not just for the
"gun" sailors.
This is a handicap series, with heats sailed
throughout the season at various locations around the state.
Teams Race
Fun races, but also very educational, with
teams chosen to mix boats of various standards and from various
clubs so that each team has an equal chance of winning the event.
Training Days
The Association endeavours to hold training
days periodically, where top sailors from within the class or from
other classes provide coaching and boat setup tips, to assist those
new to the class or to sailing in general and to improve the overall
standard of the fleet.
There is naturally a great deal of competition out on the
water while racing competitively, but most MG14 sailors are in the
class, and indeed in the sport of sailing, for fun and enjoyment.
Clubs and the Associations encourage families to attend and
participate, either on the water or as shore-support, either in an
official capacity or not. At championship series, sailors are
encouraged to stay at the same caravan parks and to enjoy the group
contact. Social events such as spit-roast dinners and dinners at
local restaurants are organised and well attended.
Many of the clubs have social sailing
weekends away in holiday locations, where family and kids all get to
have a go. BBQ's and telling sailing (tall) stories over a beer or
wine during the evenings take the place of competitive racing. Other
social events, both during the season and during the winter
off-season, are common, helping to make everyone enjoy their
involvement with the MG14 class.
The NSW Association publishes a bulletin 4
times a year, which is circulated to all members.
